Hello Subscriber

Yes, tonight is the night you have all been waiting for, the grand opening of the world-famous Melbourne International Comedy Festival. From now until Sunday 22 April there is a riot of amusing options available. But if comedy’s not your bag, don't worry. The Melbourne International Flower Show and Earth Hour both take place this week, and we've found plenty of activities to keep the kids amused during the upcoming school holidays.

Dave Thornton blogs for Melbourne

With so many shows, so many venues, and so much going on in Melbourne during the Comedy Festival, how can any one person keep abreast of it all? Step forward funny man Dave Thornton, our first ever Comedy Festival blogger. Star of his own show, 'The Some of All the Parts', Dave will give What’s On readers a fly-on-the-wall report of life in the limelight, twice-a-week throughout the festival. Check out his first blog post.

Dancers interacting with the Giant Theramin

Giant Theremin at Northbank

Until Sunday 15 April

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Giant Theremin yet, then now is the time. The pyramid-like outdoor instrument, which responds to your movements, is in Melbourne for just a few more weeks. Located on the north bank of the Yarra, near the entrance to the Old Sandridge Rail Bridge, it provides great free entertainment for young and old alike. Just walking past the structure will set off a jangle of chimes and tunes.

A multi-coloured cubby house

Flower Show Cubby House Challenge

Wednesday 28 March to Sunday 1 April

Are you taking the kids to the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show during the school holidays? Why not pop in to see the five one-of-a-kind luxury cubby houses that have been designed and built for the Cubby House Challenge. On the last day of the show the cubbies will go under the hammer in a live auction to raise money for Kids Under Cover.

A multi-coloured UV lighting display

Black-light mini golf

It’s mini golf, but like you’ve never seen it before. Under the black light of specially installed ultraviolet (UV) lighting you’ll see an old-fashioned mini-golf landscape transformed into a glow-in-the-dark wilderness that’s fun for the whole family. If you’ve never seen a Kingswood ute on a mini-golf course then now’s your chance. It’s 18 holes of fluro-kitch Australian fun.

Retro glow ice-skating

Get your skates on and celebrate the school holidays with a trip to Docklands Medibank Icehouse. With Friday's Retro Glow night and Saturday's Glow Top 40, you’ll be in a spin in no time. Dance along to the best of the 70s, 80s and 90s, or countdown the week's top hits with the Glow Top 40. Add to the fun by wearing white for extra glow – there’ll also be ice dancing and loads of giveaways.
